Nanomaterials show many properties, which are different from the bulk properties of the constituents. We will present magneto-optical results from our Co (8, 10 and 12 nm) and magnetite (15nm) samples prepared on various substrates. The magneto-optical properties are influenced by the concentration of particles, the substrate, and the way of sample preparation. We have studied a number of prototypical systems by magneto-optical Kerr effect. In general, all samples show the opposite sign of the Kerr rotation compared to bulk values of reference systems. The Kerr spectra of the particle systems are influenced by the arrangement (ordered vs. aligned) of the individual particles in the film.
