We have investigated the CDW transition in NbSe2 using grazing incidence diffraction. The evolution of the satellite reflection has been observed at the surface and in the bulk in order to extract the critical exponents and thereby carry out a direct comparison between the surface and bulk behaviour. 2H–NbSe2 undergoes a second order phase transition at the onset of the charge density structure. We have successfully isolated the surface CDW structure on a high quality single crystal using grazing incidence diffraction, at BW2, HASYLAB, observing that the surface CDW satellite varies from that in the bulk. Our recent study indicates that, at the surface, the CDW transition temperature is above the bulk transition temperature and that the transition appears to be continuous.
