"Surface Plasmon Propagation In Defined Metallic Structures" — •Jan Seidel, Stefan Grafström, and Lukas M. Eng — Institut für Angewandte Photophysik, Technische Universität Dresden, D-01062
Propagation of surface plasmons in metal films and their interaction with defined surface structures are presented. Near-field optical methods reveal properties of such travelling surface waves, like optical transmission across barriers or coupling to free space electromagnetic waves. These characteristics can be directly determined using an attenuated total reflection (ATR) excitation scheme together with dielectric fiber probes for near-field optical detection. We show results on various structures written into a silver film with focused ion beam (FIB).
