The concept of mesoscopic misfit is used to describe atomistic processes in the early stages of metal homo- and heteroepitaxy. Atomic scale calculations reveal drastic effect of the mesoscopic misfit on strain distribution in Cu , Co and Fe islands on Cu(001) surface. We demonstrate that adatom motion on mesoscopic islands, comprising a few atoms up to a few hundred atoms, is strongly dependent on the size of islands. The influence of strain fields on the stability and the decay of islands is investigated. The effect of the local stress in double layer islands on the binding energy of islands is discussed. Atomistic simulations demonstrate shape fluctuations of the islands and suggest the local decay mechanism at kink sites.
