We have done several investigations to try to understand how the size, shape and angular orientation influence the scattering and absorption of visible light for silver and gold nanoparticles.

The scattering and absorption by particles with dimension smaller than the wavelength have been studied using a combined Confocal and SNOM setup. The particles have been produced using the U. Ch. Fischer method of projection patterns[1], over a glass substrate, with several thicknesses, using different metals.

In order to investigate the scattering dependency on size and orientation with a Confocal Microscope, a total internal reflection (TIR) setup was used. This allows a comparison between reflected and scattered light by TIR in same region and for different wavelengths. Strong dependencies of scattered light by TIR on particle orientation have been found, as well as some dependencies on wavelength.

A SNOM characterization has also been done for several different sizes and materials. This allows a comparison with the results obtained by confocal microscopy for particles of larger size.
