Dissipation contrast in atomically resolved dynamic force microscopy on CaF2 (111) — •Sebastian Gritschneder, Clemens Barth, Lutz Tröger, and Michael Reichling — Department Chemie, Universität München, Butenandtstraße 5-13. 81377 München, Deutschland
The (111) surface of CaF2 is imaged with dynamic mode scanning force microscopy. We simultaneously record the frequency detuning of the cantilever oscillation, the topography signal and the dissipation signal. By systematic series of measurements we investigate contrast formation of these signals upon variation of the scanning speed and gain in the distance control feedback loop. A comparison of results obtained under different experimental conditions allows conclusions on the origin of atomic contrast in the dissipation signal. It is found that instabilities in the atomic structure of the tip have significant influence on the contrast formation in all signals but contribute to most to the dissipation signal.
