Understanding atomic contrast in dynamic force microscopy on CaCO3 (1014) — •Clemens Barth1, Sebastian Gritschneder1, Adam Foster2, Alex Shluger3, and Michael Reichling1 — 1Department Chemie, Universität München, Butenandtstraße 5-13. 81377 München, Deutschland — 2Laboratory of Physics, Helsinki University of Technoloy, PO Box 1100, 02015 HUT, Finland — 3Department of Physics and Astronomy, University College London, Gower Street, London WC1E 6BT, UK
A recent combined experimental and theoretical study of the CaF2 (111) surface demonstrated that lower symmetry surfaces may facilitate interpretation of dynamic SFM images on ionic surfaces. To further develop this approach, we turned to the CaCO3 (1014) surface that can be easily produced by cleavage and represents a most complex insulating surfaces with effectively five sub-lattices. The most challenging feature of this study is to explore whether the interaction of the scanning tip with the CO32− groups causes their deformation, rotation or displacement, and we discuss to what extent their characteristic appearance allows an association of contrast features with individual oxygen atoms when scanning at various heights.
