Using a micron-sized jet enables studying highly volatile liquids such as water by photoelectron spectroscopy. Under these conditions collisionless evaporation is achieved, i.e. photoelectrons arrive at the detector without vapor enconunters. Here we present photoemission spectra from liquid water and we also demonstrate that the method is ideally suited to access information crucial for solvation processes. The measurements were performed at the MBI undulator beamline at BESSY in the photon energy range up to 120 eV. As an example we present systematic experiments on simple aqueous salt solutions, specifically XI (X=Li, Na, K, Cs) from which we infer the electronic binding energy for both anions and cations. The effect of salt species and concentration will be discussed in the light of the water structure, saturation and surface activity. With respect to the latter aspect NaI and tetrabutylammoniumiodid will be compared.
