Reflectance Difference Spectroscopy (RDS), LEED and STM have been used to study the temperature evolution of the Cu(110)(2x1)O-stripe phase. Adsorption of submonolayer amounts of oxygen on Cu(110) dramatically reduces the intensity of the surface state transition related RDS peak at 2.1 eV. This decrease is caused by a quenching of the surface state due to randomly distributed short Cu-O strings and surface vacancies. Annealing to 480 K leads to a partial recovery of the signal as a result of the aggregation of the short Cu-O strings into Cu-O stripes and the coalescence of the many small vacancies into large vacancy islands which causes the reappearence of the surface state on large portions of the surface. Annealing to 600 K creates a well ordered Cu(110)-(2x1)O stripe phase with long range order. The ordering process has been simultaneously monitored by LEED and the surface morphology has been imagined with STM.
