Nanoparticles on Oxide Supports — •Marcus Baeumer und Hans-Joachim Freund — Fritz-Haber-Institut der MPG, Faradayweg 4-6, 14195 Berlin, Germany
The properties of metal clusters and nanoparticles are attracting more and more attention in fundamental and applied research. The application of such structures in heterogeneous catalysis in a particularly important area. Nevertheless, there is only limited fundamental knowledge about the dependence of adsorption behaviour and catalytic activity on particle size. In this contribution, we report on model systems which are prepared by metal vapour deposition. Thin oxide films grown on metallic substrates are used as supports ensuring good electrical and thermal conductivity of the samples. The structure and adsorption behaviour of these systems have been studied combining a variety of surface science techniques. Recently, their complexity has been increased further by preparing bimetallic and oxide aggregates. We will report on progress in this direction as well.
