Experimental and numerical simulations studies of plasticity in fine scale metallic multilayers — •Marc Verdier — L.T.P.C.M., Batiment Thermo - E.N.S.E.E.G., 1130 rue de la piscine, MB75, Domaine universitaire, 38402 Saint Martin D’Heres, France

Mechanical and structural properties of fine scale materials is the subject of intense investigations. Both fundamental and applied problems arise with the decrease of the internal microstructural length scale to several nanometers. Influence of length scale on a variety of physical processes such as mechanical strength, work hardening are still not well understood. Moreover, because an in-depth knowledge of the microstructure is required, little detailed experimental studies exist.

This communication will focus on some aspects of mechanical properties of metallic multilayers obtained mainly by physical vapour deposition processes. These model materials can help to answer questions such as: what is the gain one can obtain in mechanical strength of structural materials with decreasing internal length scale. Some results concerning several systems, Cu/X with X=Ni,Ag,Co,Nb and Cr are presented and actual efforts in 3D numerical simulations of dislocations dynamics in spatially confined structures are also reported.
