Epitaxial Growth, Structure and Electronic Properties of Ultrathin Pentacene and Anthracene Films — •Simon Lukas, Gregor Witte, and Christof Wöll — Lehrstuhl für Physikalische Chemie 1, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Universitätsstr. 150, 44780 Bochum.

An important prerequisite for the fabrication of high performance organic semiconductor based electronic devices (e.g. such as organic field effect transistors) is the growth of highly ordered organic films. To achieve a high charge carrier mobility the preparation of large single crystalline domains with very few grain boundaries is desired. As demonstrated earlier the appearance of rotational domains can be effectively suppressed by using anisotropic substrates such as Cu(110) or vicinal surfaces (e.g. Cu(443) or Cu(221)) which allow the preparation of highly ordered unidirectional monolayer films of pentacene and anthracene [1,2]. Here we report on a characterization of the further growth of pentacene and anthracene onto these ordered nucleation layers. A detailed structural analysis of films up to 10 ML was carried out by means of STM, LEED and NEXAFS. For comparison additional pentacene films were also grown on weakly interacting substrates like noble metals (Ag, Au) as well as on single crystalline oxide surfaces. Moreover, the electronic properties of these films were characterized by UPS. [1] S. Lukas et al., J. Chem. Phys. 114, 10123 (2001). [2] S. Lukas et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. (in press).
