He-Atom Scattering Study of the epitaxial Growth and Structure of ultrathin Pentacene and Perylene Films on Cu(110) — •Sandra Söhnchen and Gregor Witte — Lehrstuhl für Physikalische Chemie I, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, 44780 Bochum
Stimulated by the promising applications of organic semiconductors in electronic devices we have studied the epitaxial growth of ultrathin pentacene and perylene films on a Cu(110) surface. As shown in previous studies both molecules form highly ordered monolayer films on Cu(110) which can be used as a nucleation layer for further growth [1,2]. Here we report on a combined He-atom scattering (HAS) and LEED study to characterize the growth and structure of ultrathin pentacene and perylene films. Clean molecular films were prepared by thermal evaporation from an effusion cell operated under UHV-conditions and the growth was characterized in-situ by monitoring the He-atom reflectivity while the lateral film structure was analyzed on the basis of diffraction data which allows further an optimization of the growth and annealing temperatures. The resulting films of both molecules reveal structures that are different from their molecular bulk structures.
