The interaction strength of organic adsorbates with metallic surfaces is an important issue in the design of organic devices, since it determines important properties like interfacial charge transfer and level alignments. In this contribution we demonstrate that surface-sensitive vibrational spectroscopy is well suited to investigate the bonding of organic molecules to metallic substrates. On Ag(111) surfaces, e.g., PTCDA forms a charge transfer complex which exhibits a strong electron-phonon coupling [1], while on Au(111) and the other low index silver surfaces this effect is not observed. Using a range of polyacenes and their derivatives on silver, gold and copper surfaces, we have systematically varied both adsorbate and substrate in order to further clarify the origin of this remarkable behaviour.
