In this contribution we discuss how concepts of solid state physics can be applied to soft condensed matter and ordered fluids. Recently we have shown that in analogy to surface reconstructions of classic single crystals the near-surface structure can deviate from the bulk structure in block copolymers as well. New results show that the phase behavior in thin films of cylinder forming block copolymers can be understood in terms of surface reconstructions that are modulated by confinement effects. Despite the very different types of matter and order, our findings reveal a remarkable analogy and point to common underlying fundamentals of both classes of materials.
