Swelling Behavior and Viscoelasticity of Ultrathin Polymer Films — •Florian Rehfeldt and Motomu Tanaka — Technische Universität München, Physik Department E22, Lehrstuhl für Biophysik, James-Franck-Str., 85748 Garching
Design of biocompatible interface between solid surfaces (e.g. semiconductor, metal) and biological systems (e.g. cells, proteins) can be accomplished by the deposition of functional polymer films. To tailor and match interface characteristics, it is desirable to control their wetting behavior and viscoelastic properties under physiological conditions. Using an ellipsometer coupled with a climate chamber and a Langmuir film balance, thickness of the ultrathin films can be quantitatively determined at well-defined thermodynamic conditions in Å accuracy. Furthermore, viscoelastic properties can be analyzed from the Brownian motion of micro-particles by micro-interferometry. Recent results on grafted polymer brushes (PEO, poly(2-oxazoline)s) and layered films (cellulose) will be presented.
