Single polyelectrolyte molecules on solid substrate — •Sergiy Minko, Manfred Stamm, Anton Kiriy, and Ganna Gorodyska — Institut fuer Polymerforschung Dresden e.V., Hohe Strasse 6, 01069 Dresden

We report on the study of conformation of single polyelectrolyte molecules adsorbed on the solid substrate as a function of ionic strength and pH of water solution. Atomic force microscopy was used for the visualization of the adsorbed polyelectrolyte chains. We have observed experimentally the transition necklace-like stretched globule to globule conformation upon change of pH and salt concentration, which is consistent with recent theoretical predictions of Dobrynin, Rubinstein and Obuchov. We present the statistical analysis of the chain dimensions measured in AFM experiments. The stretched polyelectrolyte chains were used as molecular templates for mineralization to fabricate nanoparticles of different shape.
