The use of thin polymeric films has become of increasing interest for industrial applications. An ongoing project is the so called Millipede data storage device: An array of heated Scanning Force Microscopy tips creates dots with few 10 nm diameter in an ultrathin polymeric film. For hole formation the effect is used that polymeric materials show temperature dependent mechanical behavior. Up to now mainly bulk polymers are investigated but the obtained data can not be directly applied to thin films.
Scanning Force Microscopy (SFM) in combination with a heating device provides for the first time the possibility to probe mechanical properties on nanometer scale. Thin Polymethylmethacrylate films on different substrates are investigated performing Force Displacement Curves at room temperature and at temperatures close to the glass transition temperature. Characteristic data, e.g. slope, energy of hysteresis or indentation, are analyzed. Variations in the mechanical properties of thin films can be correlated to the glass transition Tg. To visualize the changes in mechanical properties at Tg arrays of small holes are created and the time evolution of topography is observed.
