Nucleation and domain growth in molecularly thin alkane films — •Hauke Schollmeyer and Hans Riegler — Max-Planck-Institut für Kolloid- und Grenzflächenforschung 14476 Golm
In their solid state long chain alkanes (for instance C30H62) orient themselves normal to the solid/gas interface and form an interfacial layer with the thickness of one molecular chain length. This molecular ordering remains even when the amount of alkane is not sufficient for a complete monolayer of homeotropically oriented molecules. The solid surface is only partially covered with an alkane monolayer. The morphology of this incomplete monolayer depends on the preparation history and surface coverage. It extends from single domains (seaweed-shaped, dendritic, etc) to closed monolayers with holes. Its morphology is affected by nucleation, two/three-dimensional lateral transport, aggregation kinetics at the solidification front, and intermolecular interactions. We present and analyze submonolayer morphologies resulting from various growth conditions (melt growth, solution growth, various surface coverages, etc.).
