Determination of imaging and resolution properties in real-time — •Ruediger Schmitt and Manfred Hugenschmidt — ISL, Postfach 1260, 79574 Weil am Rhein
The optical quality of imaging components is found to be rapidly affected by transient changes of surrounding boundary conditions, such as induced by the exposure to laser radiation. Several methods for determining imaging properties have been commonly used so far. Some of them are only capable of providing subjective information, others are time consuming and therefore not well suited for quantitative real time investigations. The approach of the following presentation is based on measurements of the modulation transfer function (MTF) which describes the image information in the spatial frequency domain. Several kinds of MTF-diagnostic techniques were evaluated and compared both with respect to achievable temporal response and spatial resolution. Examples, concerning fast temporal changes of the MTF-function, due to the impact of repetitively pulsed high-power laser radiation on glass optical components, such as recorded by using a CCD-camera, will be presented and discussed.
