Experiments in which low energy (10-20keV) electron beams are used to study
light emitting processes in dense gases are described. The key technique
for these experiments is an ultra-thin (300nm) ceramic membrane used as
entrance window for the electron beams sent into the gases. This leads to
compact, portable electron beam pumped devices, which are presently being
developed into efficient UV and VUV light sources. The dominant light
emission is via formation and decay of excimer molecules when rare gases or
rare gas mixtures are used. Efficiencies up to 40% have been observed for
VUV light sources on the 2nd excimer continua of the pure rare gases. The
systems can be operated from ns pulses to fully continuous. First
applications of pulsed VUV sources for single photon photo-ionisation (SPI)
in time of flight mass spectrometers (TOFMS) will be described.
