Investigation of the loss-factor of HV-ceramic capacitors — •Rainer Bischoff — Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Physikalisches Institut I, Erwin-Rommel-Strasse 1, 91058 Erlangen
As energy storage capacitors play a pivotal role in pulsed-power systems. The requirement for high conversion efficiency and short current-rise times demands for low-loss capacitors.
Using AC voltage, especially at high frequencies, dielectric loss emerges in the capacitors. Due to the repetitive reversal of polarity a part of the electric energy necessary for the displacement of the dipoles inside the capacitors is converted into heat, leading to the consumption of real electric power and a inphase effective electric current.
The results of loss-factor measurements at high dielectric ( єr ≥ 200 ) ceramic capacitors of the 4nF/20kV-class of several manufacturers (TDK, Murata, Sino Sourcing) with the main focus on the dependence of the loss-factor on temperature and applied voltage are presented. The loss-factor has been derived from the frequency ω and the dampingfactor δ of the short-circuit discharge of the capacitor within the RLC-resonant circuit of ist own resistance R, inductivity L and capacity C under the assumption of negligible influence of the wiring.
The results may lead to the choosing of the most suitable capacitor for a particular pulsed-power system.
