Sonoluminescence — •Joachim Holzfuss — Institut für Angewandte Physik, TU Darmstadt, Schlossgartenstr. 7, 64289 Darmstadt
Sonoluminescence is a phenomenon where acoustic energy is focused in a liquid thereby creating bubbles emitting light. It has been found experimentally that it is possible to prepare and analyze a single stable bubble in a driving ultra sound field. Due to its highly nonlinear oscillations the bubble interiour heats up to such an extent that it repetitively emits photons with pulse lengths in the picosecond range. The peculiarities of this energy focusing effect are discussed.
