In future fusion devices, a mixture of deuterium and tritium will interact with carbon targets in the divertor. Therefore, investigations of erosion yields by simultanious bombardement of hydrogen isotopes on carbon are necessary. The combination of hydrogen and deuterium can be studied in laboratory plasmas. Plasmas with mixtures of hydrogen and deuterium were examined in a planar inductively coupled RF plasma source. The graphite target is placed in the center of the discharge and the surface temperature as well as the ion energy are varied. The ion densities and energies (perpendicular to the sample surface) are obtained by an energy mass analyzer.

Atomic particle fluxes were determined by optical emission spectroscopy from the balmer radiation. The carbon flux was obtained from weight loss measurements. To observe erosion yields (as a function of the fluence) CH/CD and C2 radiation is used to determine the variation of the carbon flux. The relative results are then calibrated by the weight losses.

Furthermore, investigations of carbon targets which were first in contact with a hydrogen plasma and then with a deuterium plasma were carried out and vice versa. The interaction was observed in situ by optical emission spectroscopy. The results will be compared and discussed.
