On the Influence of the Plasma Current on the Rotation of Hydrogen in the T2R Reversed Field Pinch — •Frans Meijer, Bob Gravestijn, and Elizabeth Rachlew — AlbaNova University Center, KTH-Atomic and Molecular Physics, S-106 91, Stockholm, Sweden, Association EURATOM/VR

We measured the shape of the hydrogen line Hα emission to obtain information about the movement of groups of hydrogen atoms in the T2R RFP. The spectrometer used was a 1.5 m Czerny-Turner spectrometer, equiped with a 1200 l/mm grating. The specrum was monitored with an image intensifier, optically coupled to a linear array CCD camera with 2048 pixels of 14x500 µm. The time resolution used was mostly 0.4 ms.

We observed Hα along four vertical lines of sight in a poloidal plane, each both from top and bottom. The spectral line consists generally of three widely splitted components, the central one attributed to Franck-Condon dissociation of molecules released from the wall, while the shifted ones come from protons in the bulk plasma, neutralized by charge exchange. The latter components represent a group of hydrogen atoms, with higher velocity than the former. From these we calculated a radial flux with a speed of several tens km/s and a plasma rotation in this plane with a velocity component of the order of magnitude of one km/s. The plasma current shows a clear influence on the plasma rotation.

We also monitored the Hα emission in a tangential direction. These measurements showed many components, representing groups of hydrogen moving away from, as well as towards the detector. This might correspond to a change in the electric field with minor radius.
