Systematic spatio-temporally resolved spectroscopic investigations of dielectric barrier discharges in nitrogen/oxygen gas mixtures — •Ronny Brandenburg1, Kirill V. Dielectric barrier discharges (DBD) in oxygen and air operate in the filamentary mode. They consists of a number of short-lived microdischarges (MD). The behavior of DBD in a two-glass-sided electrode configuration with a gap of 1.4 mm and generated in gas mixtures of nitrogen and oxygen are investigated by voltage and current ocsillography as well as by optical emission spectroscopy. The spatio-temporally resolved MD evolution for the different gas mixtures is studied by Cross-correlation spectroscopy (CCS). Without any oxygen a Townsend-like, diffuse DBD is observed, but already some hundred ppm of oxygen leads to the formation of MDs. As lower the oxygen content (below 10% ) as more visual spatially stable MDs and a more sharp phase-distribution (i.e. the phase of the sinusoidal driving voltage) is observed. The propagation of the cathode directed ionisation wave does not change significantly with the gas composition, but quantitative differences concerning the duration and decay of the microdischarge are seen.
