Multiple timestep plasma tree code — •Susanne Pfalzner — I.Physikalisches Institut, Universität Köln, Zülpicherstr.77, 50354 Köln

We have previously demonstrated (Pfalzner & Gibbon, Phys.Rev.E(1998)) that accelerated molecular dynamics using hierarchical tree codes is a powerful tool for simulating strongly coupled plasmas. Since experimental data of thermodynamic properties of strongly coupled plasmas are very limited, these simulation results are now commonly used as testbed for analytical approaches. However, such simulations are extremely time-consuming and a speed-up highly desirable. Here it will be demonstrated how the concept of block-timesteps can improve the performance considerably. The special advantage of this scheme is that the automatic timestep determination is force-error controlled. Combining this technique with a parallel tree algorithm should give order-of-magnitude speed-ups over conventional MD codes.
