Stationary and spontaneously oscillating states in DC glow discharges — •Danijela Sijacic1 and Ute Ebert1,2 — 1Center for Math. and Comp. Science, P.O.Box 94079, 1090GB Amsterdam, NL — 2Dept. of Physics, TU Eindhoven, NL
We investigate a homogeneous planar short gas discharge gap with a high ohmic semiconductor cathode theoretically. Such systems at the transition from Townsend to glow discharge can spontaneously generate a variety of spatio-temporal patterns.
We have studied the minimal model of a planar stationary glow discharge in full parameter space numerically, and we have performed a systematic small current expansion about the Townsend limit [1], thereby revising previous results. For large pd, the characteristics shows the textbook subcritical behavior. For smaller pd, it does not immediately reach a supercritical characteristics, but always first exhibits an unexpected “mixed” behavior.
The experimentally obtained homogeneous temporal oscillations are reproduced by our numerical solutions. These oscillations cannot be explained by a two-component reaction-diffusion system. This can be seen, in particular, on our numerically observed period-doubling cascade.
