Atmospheric glow plasmas received in the last years a considerable attention. However their physical basis remains largely unknown. The generation of homogeneous plasma at atmospheric pressure was related to streamer superposition due to gas pre-ionisation through electron generation by metastable-metastable and metastable-surface collisions. There are not yet unambiguous experimental evidences, which prove the validity of this mechanism. This mechanism cannot explain how a likely instability at atmospheric pressure, the glow to arc transition, can be prevented. In this paper the work was focused on the study of the instabilities of atmospheric glow plasma and on the methods for generation of a stable atmospheric glow in a dielectric barierr discharge set-up. Plasma stability, current and voltage waveforms, light emission the roto-vibrational and excitation temperatures were studied as function of electrode gap, interval between pulses, pulse shape and nature of dielectric surface. From the experiments it was conclude that that the atmospheric glow generation is unlikely to be attributed to a metastable generated preionization. It was concluded that the dielectric surface plays an important role in the generation of the uniform glow and in the plasma stability.
