High pressure discharge lamps containing zinc halides are considered as a possible candidate for replacement of mercury containing lamps in automotive applications. A crucial precondition for the design and optimisation of such lamps is the detailed and quantitative understanding of the energy balance. Especially, the spatial temperature profile is of great importance for both the chemical composition and radiation transport.

Relevant discharge plasmas are studied by means of emission spectroscopy with absolute calibration in the range 200-833 nm. The experimental setup comprises a spectrograph (f=1m) with an attached CCD detector. The temperature profile across the plasma radius is determined from the experimentally obtained line-shapes of self-reversed lines (Karabourniotis, J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys., 16, 1267-81 (1983)). The temperature profiles obtained and the calculated species densities serve as input parameters for the equation of radiative transfer. The simulated spectra are compared with the observed ones to evaluate the internal consistency of the approach and to determine the line broadening parameters.
