Absolutely calibrated spectroscopy has been applied to detect the total intensity of self-reversed spectral lines in Hg-Xe high-pressure discharges. The plasma temperature has been determined assuming local thermodynamic equilibrium. Observable parameters of the lines 546.1, 435.8 and 404.7nm have been used to characterize the plasma structure on the basis of a simplified model for the light source. The temperature profiles obtained have been further used to simulate the spectral emission by solving the equation of radiative transfer. The influence of the spectral broadening mechanisms on the lineshape has been studied and numerical values of the broadening constants, chosen such as to provide a good agreement between measured and calculated lineshapes, have been derived.
