Molecular radicals, ions and cluster-ions play an important role in the evolution of interstellar chemistry. High-resolution spectroscopic studies of these transient species have been performed using an experimental set-up that has recently been developed at NASA-Ames Research Center to simulate the conditions that reign in the diffuse interstellar medium. The apparatus consists of a long-slit, pulsed discharge, jet expansion that is coupled to high-finesse cavity ringdown system. Attempts have been made to characterize the nature of the plasma that is generated in the free jet expansion. To further characterize the properties of the plasma, a numerical model (md2d, see http://plasimo.phys.tue.nl/) has been employed. This two-dimensional, time-dependent, fluid model solves the fluid equations for the various species self-consistently with the Poisson equation, providing an insight into the nature of the processes that occur in the plasma. The poster will present the preliminary results of the model and compare these results with experimental data. An overview and a discussion of the modeling approach will also be presented.
