Numerical study of the effect of the geometry and a magnetic field on the ion densities in a cascaded arc — •Zahoor Ahmad1, Wim Goedheer 1, and Plasimo Team211FOM-Institute for Plasma Physics Rijnhuizen, — 2Eindhoven University of Technology, The Netherlands

The plasma simulation model PLASIMO is used to investigate Ar and H2 plasmas in the cascaded arc of Magnum-psi (Magnetised plasma generator and numerical modelling for plasma-surface interaction studies). We have used the 2-D Non-LTE Hydrodynamic model for this study. In a modified arc geometry, where Ar is supplied from the usual inlet and H2 from a second inlet at the side of the channel, we have studied the influence of hydrogen molecular ions. We have also studied the plasma chemistry including the charge exchange reaction between Ar+ and H2 and found that at the outlet of the arc there are hardly any molecular ions left, while the Ar+ ions mainly contribute to the dissociation of H2. Also a comparison is made of the degree of ionization, the ion flux and the atomic hydrogen flux at the outlet of the arc for different geometries of the arc channel and nozzle, with and without an applied magnetic field. The objective of this work is related to the generation and study of a high-density hydrogen plasma flux for plasma surface interaction studies.
