During the interaction of ultraintense laser pulses with matter (I >1019 W/cm2) a collimated beam of protons is ejected from the target. These protons can be used to detect electric and magnetic fields generated during the interaction of a second intense laser pulse with high density matter. Two techniques were employed in our experiments at the LULI in Paris. First, point projection imaging gave proton shadowgrams induced by the fields. Second a regular structure imposed onto the proton beam allowed for quantitative determination of proton deflection. The technique is discussed in detail and first results are presented.
