Prospects and limitations of conditional averaging — •Dietmar Block and Alexander Piel — IEAP, CAU Kiel, Olshausenstr. 40-60, 24098 Kiel, Germany
Turbulence is known as a multi-scale problem. For large scales the existence of coherent structures is predicted by analytic models and simulations. To check these predictions experimentally, a measurement of the fluctuating plasma parameters with high spatio-temporal resolution is required, but in most cases simultaneous measurements with probe arrays demand large technical efforts. Therefore, statistical tools like conditional averaging still enjoy great popularity. Although, critical test of this method are rare. In order to show the prospects and limitations of conditional averaging, analytic and numerical studies are presented which show that the successful application is determined by a few critical parameters. The questions whether conditonal averaging is capable to resolve stuctures and to estimate their size, their shape and their contribution to fluctuation induced transport are discussed in detail. Applications to real data will be given.
