A state-of-the-art fluctuation diagnostic is expected to become operational on the Tokamak TEXTOR in the beginning of 2003. The system is a combination of a two-dimensional ECE Imaging (ECE-I) system with unprecedented spatial resolution and a Microwave Imaging Reflectometer (MIR). Both systems observe a poloidal plasma cross-section via a shared set of large-sized mirrors. The combined diagnostic can simultaneously measure temperature and density fluctuations, which is important for increasing our understanding of transport processes in magnetically confined plasmas.
The ECE-I system will measure the electron temperature (and fluctuations) in a poloidal matrix of 16 (vertically) × 8 (horizontally) sample volumes of about 1.5 × 1.5 cm2 in the poloidal plane. The MIR system images a poloidally extended area of the density cut-off layer of about 20 cm length onto a detector array to measure electron density fluctuations. The first results of this new combined diagnostic will be presented.
