Within the last few years diffuse barrier discharges (BD) have been intensively investigated. Beside their technological potential, the investigation of conditions to establish a diffuse BD is of fundamental interest. In this contribution the electrical diagnostics and spatio-temporally resolved measurements of the discharge luminosity of diffuse BD in helium and neon at a discharge gap of 2.2 mm and a pressure of about 1 bar are presented. The measured intensity evolutions for different spectral lines shows a cathode directed light, i.e. a cathode fall and a glow-discharge is formed. This is in contrast to the diffuse BD in nitrogen, where the formation of a Townsend-like discharge was observed. The measurements allows conclusions about the fundamental mechanism for diffuse BD generation. Depending on the experimental conditions one or multiple periodic discharge pulses per half-width of the driving voltage appears. With help of the temporally resolved emission spectroscopy it can be confirmed that they are caused by successive breakdowns.
