Instabilities of magnetized acrretion disk and jet — •Jan-Willem Blokland and Victor Land — Edisonbaan 14, 3439 MN Nieuwegein

Using linear perturbation theory with the non-relativistic ideal MHD equations, we investigate the instabilities and waves in an accretion disk and the accompanying jet. We define a backgroundflow-field and background magnetic field, together with a background pressure and density profile, being functions of the radial coordinate only, thus making our analysis one dimensional. Introducing an arbitrary displacement field leads to a second order differential equation for the displacement vector and the equivalent Frieman-Rotenberg wave equation in matrix notation. Projecting the components in the three directions parallel, perpendicular and normal to the magnetic field and using the equilibrium leads to a second order differential equation for the direction of inhomogeneities. Investigating the singular points of this equation results in the essential spectrum for the MHD waves. Our analytical solutions (stability criterions) are used in Ledaflow a numeric linear solver for the MHD wave equations, giving the continuous and discrete spectra.
