A new MSE diagnostic setup in TEXTOR — •Katarzyna Jakubowska and Roger Jaspers — FOM-Instituut voor Plasmafysica ’Rijnhuizen’, Association EURATOM-FOM,
Plasma is confined inside the tokamak by the external poloidal and toroidal magnetic field. The helicity of the magnetic field lines is described by the safety factor q. This q plays an important role in confinement issues of the plasma like instabilities, transport barriers, MHD effects etc. The Motional Stark Effect (MSE) diagnostic was developed to measure locally these q values. Fast hydrogen atoms injected into the tokamak emit Balmer-α light. The spectral features or the polarisation of this can resolve the q values.
This paper presents the new designed MSE setup installed on TEXTOR. Here from the intensity ratio between the π and σ components the safety factor is revealed. Preliminary measurements will be shown.
Because the proposed measurement scheme is not a polarisation measurement it is not affected by changes in the optical properties, due to for instance deposition on vessel mirrors or windows. Some beneficial implications for an ITER-MSE design will be discussed.
