Structure and dynamics of surface barrier discharges — •Anatoli Saveliev and Gerhard Pietsch — RWTH-Aachen Gasentladungstechnik Schinkelstr. 2, 52056 Aachen, Germany
If high ac voltage is applied to a discharge arrangement with one (or several in parallel) stripe or wire electrode(s) on the surface of a dielectric and an extended counter electrode on its reverse side, surface discharges appear on the dielectric. There exist several applications of this kind of discharge like treatment of surfaces and in plasma chemistry. For optimisation purposes the structure and propagation mechanism must be known.
The ignition and propagation process is determined not only by the parameters of the arrangement and the applied voltage, but also by the previous discharge activity, e. g. the accumulated charge carriers on the surface. The discharge propagates in a quasi-uniform field, which results from the field distribution of the discharge arrangement and that of the current surface charge distribution.
The structure and dynamic behaviour of the discharge was investigated electrically and optically with a photo-multiplier and an intensified CCD camera in the visible spectral range.
