Diagnostics of Low-Temperature Plasmas by Non-Linear Laser Spectroscopy — •U. Czarnetzki — Institut for Plasma and Atomic Physics, Faculty for Physics and Astronomy, Ruhr-University Bochum, 44780 Bochum

In recent years novel spectroscopic techniques and technological innovations have led to a substantial improvement of laser spectroscopic diagnostics in low-temperature plasmas. This applies to the detection of charged particles (electrons, positive and negative ions) and neutrals (atomic and molecular radicals) as well as to electric fields. Spatial and time resolved measurements with high spectral resolution provide the non-invasive determination of a wide range of important parameters like temperatures, velocity distributions, dissociation degrees, diffusion and reaction rates, sticking coefficients, voltages, currents etc.. Linear optical methods have established themselves as very sensitive and direct techniques. However, certain inherent constrains (e.g. selection rules, absorption in the vuv, available laser wavelengths) limit their applicability. Non-linear techniques can overcome some of these constrains and allow a substantial extension of the parameter region that can be probed by laser spectroscopy in plasmas. The talk will give an overview of recent developments in this field and future prospects for diagnostics.
