Recent Results from Collider Experiments on Mixing in the D0 System — •Monika Grothe — CERN, EP division, CH-1211 Geneva 23, Switzerland

Mixing phenomena, i.e. the oscillation of a neutral meson into its corresponding anti-meson as a function of time, have been observed in the K0 and B0 systems. Up to now, oscillations in the D0 system have eluded experimental detection. This is in keeping with the Standard Model (SM) prediction of small (< 10−3) mixing parameters x, y which, in the absence of CP violation, measure the mass difference (x= Δ m/ Γ) and the lifetime difference (y= Δ Γ / 2 Γ) of the CP eigenstates in the D0 system. Due to the smallness of the SM prediction, mixing in the D0 system may provide a sensitive probe for physics beyond the SM.

The collider experiments BABAR and Belle, operational since 1999 at the asymmetric B-factories PEP-II (SLAC, USA) and KEK-B (Tsukuba, Japan), have accumulated the largest presently available charm samples, with Lint ∼ 100 fb−1 each as of autumn 2002. BABAR and Belle thus provide the opportunity of studying charm decays with unprecedented statistical accuracy.

An overview of the methods for measuring x, y used at collider experiments and the status of our knowledge of x, y in the D0 system will be presented.
