Single elctrode design for the Mainz spectrometer — •Salvador Sanchez and Jochen Bonn — Institut fr Physik, Joh. Gutenberg Universität, 55099 Mainz
The Mainz neutrinomass experiment stopped data taking and was converted into a test facility for the next generation tritium β decay experiment with sub-eV sensitivity KATRIN to be build at FZK Karlsruhe. One of the most important issues in this context is the understanding and the reduction of background. Background electrons may originate from the surface of the electrodes or be correlated with local traps in-between electrodes. To reduce this background the electrode system was simplified and a wire electrode was installed in the central part to shield the volume of the spectrometer from these electrons. A significant reduction in the background has been attained. As the remaining electrodes can be operated at the same potential we plan to extend a single grid electrode to the whole spectrometer to test the single electrode configuration proposed for KATRIN. Another source of background are trapped electrons in the spectrometer. To remove them the grid electrode is split to be operated as a dipole.
