Studies of the muon-content in Extensive Air Showers underground with CORSIKA — •Rodica Tcaciuc, Arif Mailov, and Claus Grupen — Physics Department, University of Siegen
Extensive Air Showers initiated by high energy cosmic rays have been simulated with the CORSIKA program. After the first interaction of primary nuclei in the atmosphere, only the hadronic component with hadrons decaying into muons was followed. Two of several high energy hadronic interaction models have been used: VENUS and QGSJET. Each muon produced was propagated through the atmosphere and the overburden before it reached the location underground at a detector depth of 0.32km water equivalent. The detector array consists of the ALEPH detector and five scintillator telescopes (CosmoALEPH-experiment) installed at the e+e− storage ring LEP at CERN. The results of simulation have been summarized in a set of parametrizations which give the distributions of the muon multiplicity and distance of muons from the shower axis as functions of primary mass for protons, helium, oxygen and iron nuclei, for primary energies in the range from 1Tev to 10 PeV, and zenith angles varying from 0 to 65 degrees. These results are being used for tuning a fast MC-simulation. They are also compared to experimental results.
