Conformation of polyelectrolyte molecules strongly depends on environment. Tuning of pH and ionic strength can induce a cascade of conformational transitions effected by the balance between short range attractive and long range electrostatic repulsive forces. We monitor the conformational transitions of single polyelectrolyte molecules using AFM. We study linear and star-like polyelectrolytes and their response to change of aqueous and aqueous-organic environment. We use different conformations of polyelectrolytes for templating and fabrication of nanoparticles with controlled size and shape.
