An important aspect of the design of organic injection laser diodes is a possible damping of the waveguided laser mode due to the presence of electrodes. In previous experiments, surface plasmon absorption was found to remove all gain and render lasing in diode-like structures impossible. We have performed a systematic study of the dependence of gain on electrode geometry. We find that by careful choice of layer thickness and contact materials optical gain can be achieved comparable to the electrode free geometry films. In addition, we show that metallic electrodes can be combined with a periodic modulation required for distributed feedback gratings with no appreciable reduction in laser threshold. Our surprising results demonstrate that electrical contacting of organic gain media is indeed possible, and suggest future design strategies for the development of organic laser diodes.
