We present two novel approaches to prepare polymer blends with defined control of the dimensions of phase separation, both relying on polymer nanospheres prepared by the miniemulsion process (1). In the first approach, solid polymer-blends layers are prepared from a mixed miniemulsion containing particles of the pure materials while in the second approach a mixture of the two polymers are already contained in each of the individual particles. In both cases the dimensions of phase separation are determined by the particle size, which can be well controlled down to few tens of nanometers. Structural studies show that layers prepared by this approach differ from layers spincoated from common solvents with respect to both the phase-separated morphology as well as its evolution upon annealing. This opens new strategies for the preparation of multicomponent polymer layers with defined layer morphology, including functional polymers for optoelectronic devices.
