Oxidation and Hydrolyses of Polyurethane — •Thorsten Meyer, Andreas Selinger, Markus Bach und Manfred Neumann — Universität Osnabrück, Fachbereich Physik, Barbarastr. 7, 49069 Osnabrück
Polyurethanes (PUR) are remarkable multifunctional plastics which are used frequently in car-industry or for many other applications. Precise knowledge of the electronic structure of PUR- Elastomers can be determined by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Comparing two differently treated polymer samples allows the detection of different chemical structures. So propositions about chemical changes induced by ambient influences (e.g. water, air, heat) can be made. Complex aging-effects can be detected and better understood. The aging-effects are mostly oxidation- and hydrolyses-processes as well as a combination of both. The oxidation of the investigated materials was identified as the main reaction path.
