The effect of an external electric field on the dipolar aggregation equilibrium of a merocyanine dye is investigated by electrooptical absorption measurements (EOAM). It is experimentally and theoretically shown that the external field stabilizes the highly polar monomeric relative to the weakly polar dimeric form. To our knowledge this is the first quantitative demonstration of an electric field effect on the dimerization of a merocyanine dye by concentration dependent EOAM. Implications of the observed findings on the design of photonic materials such as photorefractive and electrooptical polymers containing excitonically coupled dimers are discussed. Perspectives of future work on electric field effects on the formation of more extended dye assemblies will be presented.
