We present the infrared response (IR) and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) studies of the electronic properties of bulk samples of multiwall boron nitride nanotubes. The sample was produced by a substitution reaction from single-walled carbon nanotubes.
The EELS measurements were performed at the B1s and N1s excitation edges and to study the q-dependent energy-loss function. The core excitation studies reveal strong similarities between BN-nanotubes and hexagonal BN. In addition, the π and π+σ plasmon show a significant dispersion in agreement to their delocalization along the BN-tubes.
The IR-response is dominated by two characteristic boron nitride vibrations at 800 cm−1 and at 1372 cm−1. The IR spectrum of MWBNNT can be used as a fingerprint to analyse MWBNNT in comparison with results from electron diffraction and transmission electron microscope(TEM).
